United States—US airlines preemptively canceled over 1,300 flights and delayed over 1,000 more on Monday as Beryl strengthened and struck the Texas coasts.
Flight Cancellations and Delays
A total of 1,361 flight cancellations and 1,014 flight delays were recorded up to 9.06 a.m. ET, as reported by a flight tracking website FlightAware.
United Airlines (UAL. O) dominated the list with 405 flights that had been canceled, while Southwest Airlines (LUV. N) trailed behind with 268 flights, as reported by Reuters
“We are continuing to monitor Beryl and have reduced flying at Intercontinental Airport of Houston (IAH) Sunday night and Monday.” United Airlines said in a statement.
Southwest confirmed that it was closely observing the storm, and as a result of this, it has changed some of its flight plans on Monday, specifically in Houston and south Texas, owing to the hurricane.
Travel Alerts and Impacted Airports
United and Southwest also released travel alerts because Hurricane Beryl was affecting flights in airports and cities such as Austin, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, and Houston, among others.
As for the damage inflicted by hurricanes, Beryl, which became the first Category 5 hurricane on record to hit the Atlantic season, made landfall near the coastal town of Matagorda in Texas early in the day, the NHC said.
Broader Impact on Travel
The largest ports in Texas also ceased activity and vessel navigation on Sunday following Beryl’s strengthening, as reported by Reuters.
The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday cautioned, opens new tab of thunderstorms affecting flights across the United States.
