United States – Donald Trump wants to prosecute Republicans’ most prominent critic, Liz Cheney, who oversaw the probing into his acts that culminated in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, an action that could be enough to put even more worries among those that believe he could vengefully retaliate against his political opponents if given another presidential term.
Truth Social Platform Posts
On Sunday, on his Truth Social platform in consecutive posts, Trump called for the imprisonment of the members of the congressional committee involved in investigating the Capitol attack — who arrived at a conclusion that he plotted to overthrow his 2020 electoral defeat to Joe Biden, as reported by The Guardian.
Then, those statements went in the same line as Trump’s initial comment when he said that he would act as a dictator if given his voters his second term as President.
Cheney’s Response and Legal Battles
Cheney, the vice-chair of the January 6 committee and the only Republican sitting on the panel, was defeated in the House of Representatives by Hagerty Hageman, a pro-Trump candidate, in 2022. Later that day, she replied: the only reason Trump is denying reality is that he is afraid of the truth.
Trump, specifically, has been charged with four counts of felonies in regard to the ways he went about overturning the 2020 election results including conspiracy to undermine the government of United States. The US supreme court in July prepared to hear Donald Trump’s complaint that he has immunity from prosecution based on the absolution of his presidential status from 2017 to 2021.
Also, Trump is charged with the 2020 election interference in Georgia, the retention of government secrets after he ceased to be the President and attacking the human body system.
Controversial Claims
On Sunday, Trump published on his Truth Social platform a post about the committee on January 6 exclusively formed by the Democrats, which I derogatorily call the “unselect committee,” and proposing that it should “go to jail along with the rest” of this committee.
According to the official statement made by his team, Trump launched the Truth network in the aftermath of Twitter’s—now X—at least two-month ban against him in the wake of the January 6 insurrection.
Similarly, in the next post on Truth Social, Trump supplied a link to an article written by Kash Patel, a Whitehouse staffer in the Trump administration. In this article published by the Federalist website, which is attributed to Patel, he stated the discovery of the documents that were hidden by Cheney, and which completely exonerates Trump” from the accusations that Trump had anything to do with the insurrections of January 6.
Patel, who had served as chief of staff in the defense department under Trump, said in December that if Trump happened to get re-elected, the very people in the media who had put in films on his attempt to remain in power would “come after” Trump.
Trump wrote: “She [Cheney] should be prosecuted for what she has done to our country! She illegally destroyed the evidence. Unreal!!!”
In response to this, several critics have suggested that Cheney and others who were instrumental in the investigation should be prosecuted for their actions on January 6. This recommendation came after House Republicans released a report contending that it contradicts the testimony that Trump attempted to wrestle the wheel of his presidential limousine on January 6, his eagerness to join the crowd that was attacking the Capitol.
Cheney, being almighty, was one of 10 Republicans who impeached Trump regarding the attack, which is known for the nine deaths and aimed to disprove the congressional certification of Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. A retirement wave and Trump primaries have reduced the number of Republicans to only two in office.
Political Fallout
Cheney’s father, former US vice-president Dick Cheney, released a video in 2022 urging Republicans to reject Trump, as reported by The Guardian.
“He is a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big,” Dick Cheney, who served as George W Bush’s vice-president, said in the video.
