United States: President Trump teased Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and encouraged her to be kind to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) at a House Republican Conference meeting on Thursday, and the GOP nominee is already seeking to come to terms before the November elections.
Trump’s Appeal for Unity
The quip was made a month after Greene provoked a motion to vacate against Johnson, an action that was halted by a group of Democrats and most Republicans. After the vote, Trump called on lawmakers to reject the measure in a statement he made on his Truth Social platform, as reported by The Hills.
Three participants in Thursday’s closed-door GOP conference meeting said that Trump demanded that Greene be polite to Johnson. Another source added that the request was made in a more or less joking manner and also mentioned that Trump complimented Greene.
Greene agreed to the contract when asked by the media people after the meeting.
“President Trump saw me, I don’t know how he saw me because I was sitting a ways back, and he said hello Marjorie, and he joked, and he said, ‘Are you being nice to Speaker Johnson?’ And I said ‘eh,’” Greene said, waving her hand back and forth.
“And he goes, ‘OK, you be nice to him,’” Greene continued. “And then he also said, he said, ‘She’s loyal to me. She shows up wherever I go, she supports me,’ and he told everyone in the room that I’m very capable and I always appreciate President Trump.
Ongoing Tensions Between Greene and Johnson
Greene and Johnson has not seen eye to eye since the Louisiana Republican clinched the Speaker’s gavel after the ouster of then Speaker McCarthy (R-CA). Greene opposed Johnson’s policies on each move, ranging from Ukraine aid, government funding, and warrantless surveillance power of the U. S before she filed a motion to vacate against the Speaker, as reported by The Hills.
The ouster attempt was short-lived: While discussing Greene’s resolution, Republicans immediately introduced a motion to table it, which passed with the help of Democrats.
