United States – On Monday, the Biden administration unveiled 25 projects proposed by 30 state, local, and tribal governments after seeking USD 4.3 billion in grants from the president’s climate bill.
The prizes, to be announced by early autumn and awarded subsequently, will finance the deployment of clean energy technologies in the fields of housing, agriculture, and others. Applications that the EPA has received and reviewed include almost 300 that sought more than USD 30 billion.
SIGNIFICANCE
It has been said that the above-said projects are to cut emissions by as much as 150 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent and bring down emissions by two percentage points by 2030. This would coincide with the United States’ goal of reducing CO2e emissions by about 50-52 percent in that year.
With the 2024 election approaching and campaign narratives intensifying, the EPA and other federal agencies are scrambling to dole out grants spelt out in mid 2022’s inflation reduction act. On the other hand, President Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress have proposed the elimination of several of these IRA grant and loan programs.
