United States – As officials announced late Wednesday, the 911 telephone call line service was reinstated in part of the US after the outage was experienced across all of South Dakota and in some parts of Nebraska, Nevada, and Texas.
The officials in South Dakota, Nevada, and Las Vegas proved that they had the 911 service system back on track but did not identify the root cause of the failure.
Federal Investigations Underway
The US Federal Communications Commission released a statement on its X website on Thursday saying that it was looking into the matter and was investigating.
The Department of Homeland Security, indeed, cautions, of enhanced cyber threats against the 911 services as they move to more digital systems that are based on Internet Protocol standards.
Previous Cyber Attacks Highlight Risks
Numerous cyber-attacks have hit 911 systems every year, one of those, 2017, which affected over a dozen states by facing the same problem in their system.
Response from Local Authorities
Public Safety from the South Dakota Department, police from Las Vegas, the Nebraska county District, and the Texas city of Del Rio reported 911 outages on Wednesday evening.
Del Rio police stated that the power outage originated from an insular of a cellular carrier and was not associated with civic systems.
Then, the Las Vegas police told the media that all the 911 service users were successfully contacted and offered help during the outage. Nevada police departments stated that services were again available to the southern part of Nevada as well.
Calls for Caution and Cooperation
The appeals by the authorities to people not to call 911 for the test had also been made.
Requests to the transportation department’s office of emergency medical services, where the national 911 program is located, and those to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) were not immediately responded to.
FEMA did not react to our inquiries, too.
