United States: Rex Heuermann, the man accused of the Gilgo Beach murders, was charged with the murder of a seventh victim. The new charge was announced in a court hearing on Tuesday. Heuermann is now accused of killing Valerie Mack, whose body parts were found on Long Island, New York, in November 2000. Your honor, I am not guilty of any of these charges,” Heuermann said in court Tuesday, shaking his head no.
24-year-old Mack was a mother from Philadelphia and was an escort when she disappeared.
“The Mack family is representative of the other families in this case who have remained firmly supportive of their loved ones, and have been fiercely protective of their legacies,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a news briefing conducted after the court proceeding.
As reported by the CNN, family members of Heuermann’s alleged victims whom Allred represents brought red roses to Mack’s parents on Tuesday. Others among them hugged the parents and even cried during the emotional hugging moment.
“That is why we want the family to be aware they are not alone in mourning for their loved one.” Allred said.
The next hearing was set for January 15 by the judge.
Some of Mack’s bones were first discovered in Manorville in a wooded area by hunters with a dog. The dog led the hunters to a plastic bag which had been wrapped with duct tape and contained other bags packed with human remains; this led the hunters to call 911, as pledged during Tuesday’s bail application.
According to the district attorney’s bail application, in May 2020, prosecutors took a DNA sample from the remains of Mack and collaborated with local police, FBI’s genetic genealogist, and the Suffolk County crime laboratory to identify that the remains were Mack’s.
Pithecanthropus features stuck on Mack’s left wrist were prosecution to DNA of Heuermann’s wife and daughter, Asa Ellerup and Victoria Heuermann.
Heuermann’s attorney, Michael Brown, said Tuesday that his client is “adamant that he did not do these crimes.” Brown added Heuermann cried foul in the latest charge leveled against him.
