United States – The Biden administration seeks to tighten enrollment of asylum seekers at the U. S. -Mexico border through a new regulation that will likely be rolled out today, according to four sources familiar with the matter, making a strategic move to stem illegal crossings.
Screening to Focus on Security and Criminality
The legislation would require asylum seekers to go to a screening stage at the initial stage of the procedure to decide whether they should be denied and returned immediately, according to the sources who were anonymous official sources who wanted to talk about the inner government plan. They claimed that the proposed measure failed to address poverty, as reported by Reuters.
The asylum seekers would be screened for exemption bars based on security and criminality, and two sources reported the same information.
According to one of the sources, a U.S. official, the regulation aims to simplify the procedure and conduct screenings for asylum seekers later on to determine whether or not they should be excluded. The official said it would be released as a proposed rule, and the final rulemaking would occur later.
Biden Administration Faces Mounting Pressure on Immigration
U.S. Joe Biden, a Democrat challenging for one more four-year term on the Nov. 5 election, has been facing high catch records of migrants crossing the U. S. – Mexico border since he took office in 2021. Trump, the other fellow, is the former President who accused Biden of ending the Trump administration’s more stringent policies.
Biden’s administration has even mentioned a more decisive action, like preventing asylum seekers and migrants from reaching the border through the immigration ban law deployed by Trump in the travel ban. Meanwhile, they are not currently talking about deploying such a strategy.
Expected Impact of New Regulation
Biden was forced to extend a new asylum order last year, but it remains to be seen whether better use of resources will make a difference in how many migrants can be processed, as reported by Reuters.
This already expected regulation can bring about the deportation of more than 1000 from the United States per year, two sources added, which is a relatively low amount compared with the total number of people caught crossing illegally.
