United States – Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court docket, Samuel Alito, was secretly taped, and the video was made public on Monday by a liberal activist, where Alito nodded in affirmation to the statement that the US needs to “get back to being a place of godliness.”
Reuters has not been able to confirm the origins of the recording or its authenticity; the recording was made by an activist named Lauren Windsor and aired in Rolling Stone media.
When asked for a comment, the Supreme Court only responded that it could not comment on the issue. Rolling Stone’s spokesperson ignored a call for his comment.
Details of the Recording and Responses
Reuters interviewed Windsor, who stated in an email that she attended the Annual Dinner of the Supreme Court Historical Society on June 3 because she was a paid-up member of the association and posed herself as a conservative Christian until she engaged both Alito in a conversation where she asked him about how the country could become less politically divided before switching to religion.
In the recording, she said: “I think that the solution really is like winning the moral argument. Like, people in this country who believe in God have got to keep fighting for that, to return our country to a place of godliness.”
A voice that sounded like Alito’s responded: Yes, I did. I said, Yes, I agree with you. Yes, I agree with you.
When asked about the current divide in American politics, the voice that sounded like Alito responded: “One side or the other is going to win. I don’t know. I mean, there can be a way of working — a way of living together peacefully, but it’s difficult, you know, because there are differences in fundamental things that really can’t be compromised. They really can’t be compromised. So it’s not like you are going to split the difference.”
Windsor said: “In saying that one side will win and that some things can’t be compromised, he is admitting a lack of impartiality, which is bedrock to our system of justice.”
Reactions to the Recording
James Duff, the executive director of the Supreme Court Historical Society, said in an emailed statement: “We condemn the surreptitious recording of Justices at the event, which is inconsistent with the entire spirit of the evening.”
Alito has been in the spotlight regarding allegations that flags linked to the efforts of the then-president to nullify his 2020 election defeat were hoisted at two of the justice’s residences, ignoring calls by Democrats for recusal in cases on the 2020 election.
Alito’s Recent Controversies
In May, the New York Times said that there were two trump flags similar to those waved by some Trump backers during the assault on the US Capitol in January this year at the justice’s homes. An upside-down American flag was seen at his Virginia house in the Washington suburbs, and one with the words ‘Appeal to Heaven’ on it in his New Jersey summer residence, as reported by Reuters.
The ”Appeal to Heaven” flag symbolizes the goals of some conservative activists who want to make the US government more Christian.
Alito, in a statement last month dismissing demands for his recusal, said he was not aware of the flag in the above-mentioned meaning. He also informed the lawmakers that his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, arranged the flying of the two flags. Reuters could not confirm this to its own knowledge.
