United States: The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School girls’ field hockey team has forfeited their scheduled game against Somerset-Berkley High School after learning that a transgender girl would be playing on the opposing team.

The decision marked the first time Dighton-Rehoboth forfeited a game after implementing a new policy that ensured no female player would be penalized for refusing to play against a team, including a boy, as per reports.

The policy change occurred after a female player on their field hockey team had her teeth knocked out by a male player on the Swampscott High School team. This incident landed her in the hospital.

The video of the incident went viral online immediately, sparking outrage among defenders of women’s sports.

They pointed out that allowing boys to compete against girls not only puts female players at an athletic disadvantage but also poses major safety problems.

The game against Somerset-Berkley was scheduled for September 17. According to NBC10, Dighton Rehoboth Superintendent Bill Runey said he hopes the school’s decision will prompt others to do the same and force changes that protect women’s sports.

Per Massachusetts state law, schools cannot prohibit students from participating in sports teams that match their “gender identity,” which allows fully post-pubescent boys to compete against girls, according to reports.
