United States—Democrat Angela Alsobrooks won the U. S. Senate primary in Maryland on Tuesday, thus, she will be the one who will face the popular former Governor Larry Hogan in the November matchup, while in West Virginia, House Republican Carol Miller defended herself from the challenger who joined the Revolution on January 6, 2021 Capitol Riot.
High-Profile House Race
Another primary race in which is high-profile, a former U. S. Capitol police officer, Harry Dunn, who defended the lawmakers that day, who lost his Democratic primary for the U. S. House in Maryland to the state Senator Sarah Elfreth, Edison Research projected, as reported by Reuters.
The party primaries in three states are part of a long series of contests through September that will set the stage for the Nov. 5 elections, when control of the U.S. Congress and White House is on the line.
The Republicans will be defending a narrow House majority, which is now 217-213 with five vacancies, while the Democrats will be fighting to keep their 51-49 Senate majority as they defend incumbents in half a dozen competitive states.
Maryland Senate Dynamics
Besides, Brooks was almost declared the winner by Edison Research, which projected that he led over David Trone, a House lawmaker, and a rich alcohol retailer, by 54%-42% with 58% of the expected vote counted. Thus, he will face Hogan. Brooks would be the first Black female in the States’s history to be US Senator if elected.
Even though Maryland has not sent a Republican senator since 1970, Hogan was loved by the people as a governor and the pollsters indicate that the general election would be a tough one. A loss there would be the ruin to the Democrats’ aspirations of maintaining the Senate control.
In West Virginia, Miller gave Derrick Evans, who was in prison after pleading guilty to the role in the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol by Donald Trump supporters, by 62%-38% with 81% of the expected vote tallied, Edison Research projected.
Miller is one of the 139 House Republicans who supported Trump’s attempt to change his 2020 election loss to the Democratic President Joe Biden, and he represents a very Republican district in West Virginia and is expected to win reelection easily.
BACON HOLDS ON
In Maryland, Elfreth was one of the two dozen Democrats running to replace retiring Representative John Sarbanes. She won Dunn by 36%-25%, with 59% of the expected vote counted.
Elfreth, 35, was the youngest woman to be elected to the state Senate in Maryland’s history when she won that seat in 2018.
House Race in Nebraska
In Nebraska, moderate Republican Representative Don Bacon faced challenger Dan Frei. Bacon is famous for his bipartisan work with Democrats, such as on a vote to certify the results of the 2020 election, Reuters added.
As of the time, when 54% of the votes had been counted, Bacon took 65%, and Frei had 34%.
Bacon’s district is anticipated to be the one with the closest race in November.
His Democratic competitor in the general election is Tony Vargas, a former teacher, school board member, and current state senator who ran without any challengers for the nomination. Bacon, with just a few votes more than Vargas, was elected in the 2022 election.
