United States – A federal judge on Tuesday denied prosecutors’ motion to muzzle Trump, saying no to their bid to bar the former US president from making provocative statements about law enforcement following Trump’s campaign’s lie that the FBI had permission to assassinate him during a search of his Mar-A-Lago residence in Florida earlier this week.

Prosecutorial Motion

Assistant US Attorney for the District of Columbia Special Counsel Jack Smith moved the U. S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to alter the protective measures for the Republican presidential candidate, stating that some of his utterances were false and inflammatory to prompt the bureau as well as trial witnesses for threats, violence, and harassment, as reported by Reuters.

Trump’s Response

Trump said no to Smith, and his lawyers demanded sanctions against the prosecutors. They stated that they were acting in ‘bad faith’ by presenting the request on a Friday evening before a holiday and not providing enough time for the defense to discuss the issue.

Importance of Conferral

“The court finds the Special Counsel’s pro forma ‘conferral’ to be wholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy,” wrote Cannon, who was appointed by Trump in 2020, as reported by Reuters.

“It should go without saying that meaningful conferral is not a perfunctory exercise.”
