United States: In the country of Georgia, twelve people were found dead at the Gudauri ski resort. Police reported that 11 of the victims were from India, and one was from Georgia. The bodies were discovered on the second floor above an Indian restaurant at the resort. All of the people who died worked in the building where their bodies were found.
The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi said it would help in the manner of any and all support for the families and the government is on a process how to send the dead bodies of the 11 Indians back home.
Preliminary tests did not reveal any sign of violence on the bodies, police said, but they noted that a power generator had been brought inside the house taking into bedrooms and switched on after power supply was cut off on Friday.
As reported by the CNN, police have opened an investigation into the tragedy under Article 116 of the criminal code which means negligent manslaughter.
Gudauri is located in the high Caucasus close to the Russian border and is rapidly gaining popularity as a cheap destination for tourists as an alternative to most European ski resorts in the Alps. Consulting firm reported that foreign tourists arriving at the Gudauri resort in 2023 exceeded 300000.
Now the parking lot of the said resort is located at 7200 feet (2195 meters) –higher in fact, than the upper crest of most alpine ranges. Gudauri hosts 56 kilometers (35) of slopes to ski and it rises up to 10,750 feet (3,277 meters).
The resort is approximately 120 kilometers or 75 miles from Tbilisi which has been experiencing protest for weeks following the escalating autocratic government’s resolution to suspend the EU accession talks. There has been police brutality during the protests.
On Saturday, Georgian lawmakers elected Mikheil Kavelashvili, a has-been football player and a leader of the radical far-right party as Georgia’s next president further boosting the Kremlin-friendly Saakashvili government while souring relations with the pro-Western opposition.
